Startup Kebbi Hub engagement the British High Commissioner to Nigeria

Startup Kebbi Hub participated in the CSOs engagement with Her Excellency, Catriona Laing (the British High Commissioner to Nigeria) during her visit to Kebbi State. Our Managing Partner, Awwal Hassan Wara made a presentation on what works, the challenges, and possible interventions as it relates to technology, entrepreneurship, grants, and aid.

Kebbi State is emerging in terms of opportunities in ICT. The Kebbi State Government in partnership with the Bank of Industry has set up a standard facility (Kebbi Innovation and Tech Hub) to provide tech education and tech support to the citizens of the state. The hub offers training ranging from basic computer literacy, robotics, data science, software development, and also incubation programmes for startups. He commended the efforts of the Kebbi State Government for providing the enabling infrastructure and key policies (including establishing the Kebbi State Ministry of ICT) spurring the growth of the tech ecosystem.

The challenges presented focused on human capacity development that will ensure continuous training for the citizens of the state, which is necessary for the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem of Kebbi State to thrive.

He appealed to Her Excellency, the British High Commissioner to facilitate partnership with the UK tech hub in Nigeria and other stakeholders to provide opportunities and support for tech talents/startups emerging in the state. Notably, technology has been a platform providing several youths in the state with meaningful employment. It is also a tool for social justice and social inclusion through different technology-driven projects in the state.

Also, Mr. Awwal recognized that Kebbi State has benefitted from aid and grants from the UK over the years, he appealed that HE through her office should facilitate more aid and grants to support the state, especially in critical sectors such as health, education, and agriculture. He also reiterated the capacity of the state’s MDAs ability to facilitate and implement the projects in partnership with CSOs.

We hope HE had a wonderful visit to Kebbi State and look forward to more fruitful engagements.
